    Biographical Statement

    Mrittika Basu joined UNU-IAS as a JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellow in October 2016. She was awarded a Ph.D. by Kyoto University in March 2016. Her doctoral thesis was based on field-based research that encompassed assessment of water security on a provincial scale as well as a household scale in rural India. It also examined the rural communities’ capacity to adapt to the changing climatic and water availability conditions and tried to understand the various indigenous adaptation strategies practiced by the local people. Based on the results, policy implications were suggested; and a water security framework was developed that intends to work with significant community engagement in the planning, execution, and monitoring phases. She has published the research results in a number of international scientific journals and presented at different international fora. At UNU-IAS, her research focuses on an inclusive assessment of the substitution of capitals (natural capital to produced capital) due to rapid urbanization and its impacts on the inter-generational sustainability and well-being (non-economic) of peri-urban communities.

    Prior to coming to Japan, Mrittika worked in various capacities in some of the leading institutions in India such as the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. She has also worked as a consultant in various research studies in the fields of solid waste management, water quality assessment, disaster risk reduction, and agriculture.
