UNU-IAS initiated a monthly lecture series on the theme of ‘Mandela and I’ for people who are interested in studying the lessons and legacies of Nelson Mandela as a way to improve their understanding of leadership and moral authority in the world. The lecture series is organized as part of the UNU-IAS Project on Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA), with the cooperation of the South African Embassy in Tokyo.
For the second lecture, we will welcome Mr. Yasushi Naito, Executive Advisor to the Director General, Africa Department of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), who was one of the first Japanese diplomats to meet Nelson Mandela after he was released from prison. Mr. Naito lived in South Africa for 16 years, and this lecture will offer participants an opportunity to learn about his personal experience and relationship with Nelson Mandela.
The one and a half hour lecture session will consist of a 40~45 minute lecture by Mr. Naito and a subsequent Q&A and discussion session. It will be moderated by a student secretariat team with the support from UNU faculty.
This event will be held in English, but an oral summary in Japanese will be shared at the end of the lecture.
