UNU-IAS initiated a monthly lecture series on the theme of ‘Mandela and I’ for people who are interested in studying the lessons and legacies of Nelson Mandela as a way to improve their understanding of leadership and moral authority in the world. The lecture series is organized as part of the UNU-IAS project on Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA), along with the cooperation of the South African Embassy in Tokyo.

For its fifth session, UNU-IAS will be hosting an interactive roundtable discussion focusing on the role of the next generation of leaders, with representatives from the South African Embassy in Tokyo and the Republic of Kenya to support a lively discussion. With an aim to engaging the audience, discussions will rely on audience participation, sharing opinions on topics such as the relationship between youth and social change, what future leaders can learn from past leaders, and unique challenges that the next generation of leaders will face.

The 1.5 hour session will consist of a 30 minute group activity, followed by a 35–45 minute round table discussion, with time for networking at the end. The session will be moderated by the “Mandela and I” student secretariat team.
