Toward Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Luang Prabang

UNU-IAS will hold an online session of the 67th Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society

UNU-IAS will organise an online session at the 67th Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES 2023) to be held in Washington, D.C. under the theme ‘Improving Education for a More Equitable World’. The event will introduce early findings of a larger study on youth who participated in the Youth Ambassadors' Forum, a series of workshops aiming to promote sustainable development and enhance the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in Luang Prabang, Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The participants received training on the concepts and practices involving ICH, the importance of community involvement in safeguarding ICH, and their linkages with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Background

The Youth Ambassadors’ Forum is part of the Enhancing Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Safeguarding and Transmission Using ICT in Luang Prabang project. The project is expected to contribute to SDG localisation in Luang Prabang by strengthening the community’s heritage safeguarding through awareness raising (SDG 11.4), promoting sustainable tourism through a collective effort between current and future artisans (SDG 8.9), and enhancing educators’ capacities to facilitate ICH safeguarding (SDG 4.7).

UNU-IAS will also contribute to an online session 'Climate Change, Sustainability, and Environmental Justice' on 15 February 2023 at 9:45–11:15 (JST). Sawaros Thanapornsangsuth (JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellow) will discuss constructionist design for sustainable development in higher education, and present a qualitative design-based research project conducted with undergraduate and graduate-level students from Japan and Thailand.
