GIAHS Youth Summit: Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems for the Future and to the World

To mark the 10th anniversary of the designation of sites in the Noto Peninsula and Sado Island, Japan, as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), the UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa Kanazawa (OUIK) will organise a youth summit series in October–November 2021. The GIAHS Youth Summit: Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems for the Future and to the World – Let’s connect from Sado and Noto, will bring together young people to talk and think about the value of the GIAHS and the future of GIAHS regions where they want to continue to live.

Three events will be organised as part of this series:

• 16 October, 14:00–15:30 (JST)
• 30 October, 13:00–15:30 (JST)
• 26 November, 09:30–15:00 (JST)

Background

In 2011, two locations in Japan — the Noto Peninsula and Sado Island — became the first areas of a developed country to be recognised as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) sites. 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the recognition. During the period, the youth who will lead the next generation are learning about the charms and challenges of the regions and taking various actions to develop the future they want. In this three times series, participants will learn about GIAHS and imagine the future of Satoyama and Satoumi through sharing their activities and ideas from the Noto Peninsula and Sado.

Language

Please note that the series will be mainly in Japanese, and no English translation will be provided. More information is available on the UNU-IAS OUIK website.

Participation

The series aims to engage young people from GIAHS sites who want to learn about GIAHS.

*There are no age or affiliation restrictions for the participation in the first and second sessions (junior high school students are also welcome).

*The final session is mainly for high school students and the older who wish to actively speak about the future of GIAHS after the first and second sessions.
