Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change and Other Social Challenges by Conservation and Restoration of Mangrove Ecosystem, Focusing on its Multiple Services

A side event at CBD COP15 will be held on mangrove ecosystem conservation as a nature-based solution for post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Time
- America/Toronto

This side event at the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15) will discuss how mangrove ecosystem conservation can address multiple challenges in coastal areas, and share relevant government policies and implementation activities by donors and private companies. It will identify challenges and opportunities for mangrove conservation as a nature-based solution (NbS) to accelerate restoration and ensure sustainable management to achieve the targets of post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Participation

The side event is open to attendees of CBD COP15. It will be held in Room Brahmaputra 511CF.

Organisers

The event will be co-organised by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); the CBD Secretariat; the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ); the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, Indonesia; UNU-IAS; and the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI).

Background

Mangrove ecosystems bring a variety of benefits to people, addressing multiple challenges simultaneously, including climate change, disaster risk reduction, and enhancement of livelihood. However, mangrove forests have drastically declined over the last decades, and efforts have been made by governments to promote mangrove conservation and restoration. Responding to a growing number of institutional investors who incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing approaches, private companies are expected to purchase carbon credits generated from mangrove conservation projects in order to achieve their carbon neutral targets by 2050.
