    UNU-IAS will be organizing an official side event on the theme of Traditional Agriculture System and Biological Diversity on 7 October 2014 at the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP12) to be held in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea.

    The side event will discuss how the conservation of traditional agricultural systems can play an important role in promoting conservation of biodiversity and contribute to “biological diversity for sustainable development”, the theme of CBD COP12. In particular, it will focus on the contributions of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) to the conservation of biological diversity and also share best practices and experiences of local governments of GIAHS-designated sites in Korea and Japan.

    Speakers include Prof. Kazuhiko Takeuchi, Senior Vice-Rector of UNU, Dr. Sang-Bum Kim, Department of Agricultural Environment, Rural Development Administration (RDA), National Academy of Agricultural Science, Mr. Masazumi Horihata, Director General, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ishikawa Prefecture, Dr. Kang Seung-Jin, Jeju Development Institute, Jeju Special Self-Governing province and representative from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) .

    The side event is jointly organized with Republic of Korea RDA, with support from co-organizers Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan and the FAO.
