The UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa (OUIK) will organize a symposium in celebration of its tenth anniversary. Since 2008, OUIK has been promoting a reassessment of the importance of satoyama and satoumi, both internationally and domestically. In 2015, it expanded its research to emphasize sustainable urban planning, with a focus on biocultural diversity. OUIK has also been very active in promoting local efforts to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This symposium will look back at what has been achieved thus far and discuss the way forward for Kanazawa City and Ishikawa Prefecture regarding contributions to the SDGs and preserving biocultural diversity.
