Hayama, Japan (2 June 2017) – Registration is now open for the 9th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) 2017, to be hosted by IGES and the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), on 25-26 July 2017 in the port city of Yokohama, Japan.
This year the region’s key decision-makers, leaders and experts will meet under the theme Transformational Changes: Putting Sustainability at the Heart of Action and deliver concrete recommendations on how to make sustainable development a reality in Asia and the Pacific.
This regional forum will feature renowned international experts, including: Dr. Hoesung Lee, Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Mr. Rintaro Tamaki, Deputy Secretary-General, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development; Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, the Energy and Resources Institute; Dr. Bambang Susantono, Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development, Asian Development Bank, and many other leading experts.
Registration is now open to all participants, including representatives from governments, development agencies, universities, research institutes, private sector and civil society organisations, and the media.
Background:
Since the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in 2015, many early movers — including national government agencies, as well as non-state actors, such as cities, corporations and financial institutions — have taken bold action on climate, energy, environment and human rights. However, recent international political events have brought new challenges for development cooperation efforts, raising questions about the strength and durability of these commitments. Against this backdrop, it is essential that all stakeholders invested in the future of sustainable development convene in one place to exchange their views and perspectives on the way forward.
It is in this context that leading experts and practitioners are meeting at ISAP2017 to explore possible pathways and options for accelerating low-carbon, climate-resilient, inclusive societies. Taking stock of present and future challenges, a central goal of the event will be to identify priorities for action towards scalable and transformative change.
