Welcome to the website of the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability. UNU-IAS is a new institute dedicated to advancing efforts towards a more sustainable future, through policy-oriented research and capacity development focused on sustainability.

Working in three thematic areas—sustainable societies, natural capital and biodiversity, and global change and resilience–the institute serves the international community, contributing to policymaking and debates within the UN system.

UNU-IAS was inaugurated on 1 January 2014, and consolidates two previous UNU institutes: the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (which was based in Yokohama), and the UNU Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP, based in Tokyo). UNU-IAS builds on these strong foundations, combining resources and bringing renewed focus to better serve UNU’s stakeholders in Japan and worldwide.

The institute is led by Dr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, its inaugural Director. Dr. Takemoto brings to the position some four decades of comprehensive experience in environmental policy development and research management, and as an international environmental diplomat.

“I am delighted that Dr. Takemoto, so well known to us and to many others in the world of international environmental research and action, will be joining us. His arrival greatly strengthens our team”, said Dr. David Malone, UNU Rector.

In an introductory director’s message, Dr. Takemoto emphasizes that “with its unique focus, expertise and approach, UNU-IAS has great potential to make important contributions towards addressing the difficult and pressing challenges of global sustainability.”

He announces that “I will be placing a strong emphasis on enhancing our international engagement, particularly by developing stronger links with the UN policy community and raising the visibility of our research.”

Dr. Takemoto also extends his thanks to the partners and funders of both UNU-ISP and the Institute of Advanced Studies for their generous support:

“I am looking forward to building upon these relationships and further strengthening our collaboration in the months and years ahead. Sincere thanks are also due to the members of the advisory boards and the UNU Council for providing invaluable support and guidance over the years. I would also like to express my appreciation to the previous directors of the two institutes for building the hard-working and dedicated team which UNU-IAS inherits from them.”

    Introducing Our Website

Launched today, the UNU-IAS website has been designed to reflect the unique vision and approach of the new institute. Over the past few months, our communications team have been working hard to build a website that will showcase the institute’s latest news and other highlights, while providing easy access to detailed information on its full range of activities. In this process we have been closely supported by our colleagues in the UNU Office of Communications.

We hope you will take some time to explore the site, and learn more about the institute, our research and capacity development activities, events, publications, degrees and other courses.

The website will continue to evolve as we add new features and content over the coming months. We warmly welcome your comments and suggestions, which can be submitted here.
