On 28 July, UNU-IAS held a seminar on Africa’s Industrial Competitiveness and Human Capital, welcoming Jennifer Blanke, Vice President of the African Development Bank, as guest speaker. Her presentation highlighted some major challenges the African continent faces, such as low industrial competitiveness and youth unemployment, and discussed how the African Development Bank views the need to further strengthen the ties between the job market and the higher education sector. She introduced the bank’s ongoing initiatives in the sector, including collaboration with UNU-IAS on its Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) programme as one successful example. Her presentation was then followed by an interactive session with three young African scholars, Farai Kapfudzaruwa (JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellow), Christian Otchia (Assistant Professor, Kwansei Gakuin University), and Nobuhle Ndhlovu (Ph.D candidate, UNU-IAS).
