From 20 to 29 November 2019, UNU-IAS contributed to two meetings in connection with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) — the 23rd meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-23), and the 11th meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions (WG8J-11) in Montreal, Canada. UNU-IAS researchers presented research and activities of the institute’s International Satoyama Initiative and contributed to expert discussions.

A UNU-IAS side event on 27 November shared outcomes of the institute’s workshop held in September 2019 in Kumamoto, Japan, one of a series of events held by the CBD Secretariat and partner organisations as part of a process to develop a global policy framework for biodiversity following the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020.

On 21 November William Dunbar (Senior Communications Coordinator, UNU-IAS) also moderated a side event titled “Mainstreaming Biological and Cultural Diversity – Nature and Culture – into the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework” organised by the CBD Secretariat and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
