From 9-10 February 2020, UNU-IAS, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency co-organised an environmental workshop and presentation contest for Japanese high school students. The event was held to empower and encourage youth involvement in the implementation of the SDGs.
During the first day, Mizuki Kitagawa UNU-IAS Communications Associate introduced activities conducted at UNU-IAS to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), building a platform for students to the linkage of the SDGs and their own activities. On the second day, sixteen selected high schools presented their activities aiming at resolving environmental, social and economic problems. The UNU-IAS Director Award was presented to Nakui Agricultural High School in Aomori Prefecture, team “Treasure Hunters”, for their activities on improving soil fertility and soil moisture of the Zai pit system used in West Africa, by applying traditional and environmentally friendly Japanese earthen flooring techniques.
