Biographical Statement

Makiko Yanagiya joined the UNU-IAS as Programme Coordinator for the International Satoyama Initiative project in June 2020. Prior to joining UNU-IAS, she has worked in the government of Japan on issues related to biodiversity locally, regionally, and globally. She has experience in implementation of CITES, management of national parks in Japan (including serving as a park ranger), conservation of migratory birds and marine biodiversity in exclusive economic zones and areas beyond national jurisdiction, and management of wetland and coastal ecosystems, leading the development of Japan’s national action plan for coral reef ecosystem conservation. She worked at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal from 2016 to 2019.

Ms. Yanagiya majored in landscape ecology and received a master’s degree from Keio University in Japan. Her interests are developing nature-human relationships for sustainable development, mainstreaming values of biological and biocultural diversity, and integrated management for biodiversity conservation, especially in coastal ecosystems.
