Dr. Yoshifumi Masago joined UNU-IAS as a Research Fellow in April 2015. He gained his Doctor of Engineering degree in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo. Prior to joining UNU-IAS, he was an Associate Professor at New Industry Creation Hatchery Center, Tohoku University.
His research has mainly focused on microbial water quality of various types of water, and its effect on human health. He has a wide range of research skills including general and molecular microbiology, chemical and microbiological water quality analysis, quantitative microbial risk assessment, and environmental and sanitary engineering. He has been the Principal Investigator of several research projects, and has also participated in many research projects in developing countries, especially in South-East Asia. He is currently interested in investigating the future of urban water environments in developed countries, which could be affected by urbanization, globalization and climate change.
